Tour look for new sponsor in Florida Swing
The PGA Tour’s March stop at Innisbrook will need a new title after 2012, as eyewear maker Transitions has notified the tour of their intention not to renew their deal.

Tampa-based Transitions Optical originally signed a four-year contract in 2008 which is due to expire after next year’s tournament, played in March during the Florida Swing. According to Golfweek, the company told the tour of their decision last week.

“All along, we had said we would make a decision in the final year,” said Connie Falvo, director of external affairs for Transitions Optical.

“We’ve reached a very large number of golf enthusiasts and professional golfers, and now we have to broaden that reach to get beyond just golf and try to tap into others outside of golf.”

Tour spokesman Ty Votaw says the tour will be looking for another company to step in.

He says the tour has a good track record in the last three years replacing title sponsors and remains hopeful. Votaw says there already are discussions with potential sponsors.

He declined Tuesday to speculate on the future of the Tampa Bay area if another sponsor cannot be found, or if another event would move into that slot in March.

Tampa has had four title sponsors in the last 10 years including included Buick, Chrysler and storage company PODS.

Before joining the schedule as the Tampa Bay Classic in 2000, Innisbrook hosted the JCPenney Classic, a mixed-team event featuring players from the PGA and LPGA tours.
