Mickelson to try long putter for DB Championship
|
Phil Mickelson is set add a new string to his bow or rather a new club to his bag at today’s Deutsche Bank Championship. The new piece of gear that is de rigueur for all recent Tour winners: the belly or long putter.
"It's awkward to me," Mickelson acknowledged after his pro-am round Thursday at the TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. "But so many guys have had success with it that I thought I'd give it a try."
The longer putters have been getting a lot of notice this year with players like Australian Adam Scott and former LGPA number one Michelle Wie having seen notable success with them this season.
The real big belly winner though was American rookie Keegan Bradley, who became the first player to win a major with one at the PGA Championship last month.
Four-time major winner Mickelson, once acclaimed for his fluid putting, has shown inconsistencies from shorter distances over the last few years.
"Look, I don't mind trying new things. I've hit two drivers and no drivers, and I don't mind trying something different. We'll see."
Having tried out two drivers at the Masters and no drivers at the U.S. Open, and dropping to No. 11 in the PGA, Mickelson is determined to get back into the top five before the Tour Championship at the end of the month as he tries to win the FedEx Cup and the $10 million prize.
