Hunter wins Match Play and enter Top 10

Hunter Mahan completed a fine week in the Arizona desert to defeat Rory McIlroy 2&1 in the final of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

The American was recognised as having played the best golf all week, and in a format where that doesn’t always guarantee victory, he was able to hang tough on Sunday and deny his Northern Irish opponent the chance to go to World Number One for the first time in his career.

Instead, Mahan now finds himself at a career high on the Official World Golf Ranking, having risen 13 places up to ninth position.

The rest of the PGA Tour headed down Mexico way this last week, and while their counterparts dealt with a potentially marathon week in Arizona, rookie John Huh was picking up his maiden title after a titanic 8-hole playoff victory over Australia’s Robert Allenby.

Teeing it up in only his fifth event on the Tour, Huh shot an eight under par 65 to get into the mix, but it was Allenby who had the tournament in his grasp standing on 18 with a two shot lead.

However, a pushed drive at the last would cost him a double bogey, and when Huh parred the eighth hole of sudden death, the title was his. Along with the trophy, the young American now climbs 129 places on the ranking and up to 137.
