Although Tiger Woods may be dropping in the world golf rankings, his selling power is just as strong as ever with his next appearance a big deal in a normally quiet Fall Series event in the foothills of northern California.
Last month, the former world no.1 stated he would be taking part in the Frys.com Open, and tournament consultant Duke Butler said ticket sales exploded following the announcement. Organizers expect to have at least three times the number of attendees than a year ago.
The tournament will be hosted on Oct. 6-9 at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin.
Along with getting Woods, the field has other big name players including Ernie Els, two-time major champion Angel Cabrera and former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.
"We hope to have 15,000 people a day," Butler said. "We have an agreement with the county of Santa Clara that we'd have a maximum paid crowd of 15,000 a day."
The Frys.com Open will also be the first opportunity for the public to see the new player-caddie team of Woods and Joe LaCava, who was announced as Tiger’s new bagman earlier this week.
While a few tickets are still available, hotel rooms are being snatched up according to Butler.
Heightened interest due to Woods presence will also have farther reaching effects, with the tournament proving a boon for them economy of San Martin, located just south of San Jose.
"Fry's is popular in Santa Clara County right now," Butler said.
