Tiger Woods first player to top $100 million
Already one of the richest sportsmen on the planet thanks to huge endorsement deals over his lucrative career, Tiger Woods has now become the first $100 million man by earnings on the PGA Tour.

The 36-year-old's third place finish at the weekend's Deutsche Bank Championship earned him $544,000 which pushed him over the milestone for a total of $100,350,700. Phil Mickelson is second on the list with $66,805,498.

''The purse increase helps,'' Woods said. ''I won fewer tournaments than Sam Snead has, but obviously he was in a different era. It's just that we happened to time it up right and happened to play well when the purses really had a nice spike up.''

Although Sam Snead leads the PGA circuit with 82 Tour victories, he earned just $620,126 in a career that spanned 53 years from 1934 to 2987. Snead's bigget single pay day was  a runnerup finish in Milwaukee which earned him a cheque for $28,000 in 1968.

By contrast, Woods has won 74 events, with 38 of them coming with a first prize of $1 million or more.

''It was nice to have a nice start to my career, and I won some majors early,'' he said. ''I think we got some interest in the game of golf. A lot more youth, that's for sure.''
