Fred Couples withdraws from Players
|
Fred Couples will be joining compatriots Dustin Johnson and Anthony Kim on The Players Championship injury list, after announcing he will skip the event with illness.
A two-time Players Championship winner, who won the 2011 Senior Players Championship to earn a place amopngst the field, did not give a specific reason for his withdrawal.
However, he had been suffering from the flu in recent weeks and did not play a Champions Tour event in Houston last week.
As Couples' place does not count against the 144-player limit, first alternate Brian Harman will still be kicking his heels in the hope of another withdrawal.
Couples misses out on the chance to win The Players in three decades, having won the tournament in 1984 and 1996, and Thursday's tournament would have been his 27th start of the year.
A successful stint on the Champions Tour has seen him emerge victorious on seven occasions, and just last month he shared the 36-hole lead in the US Masters at Augusta National.
The winner of that major, Bubba Watson, had already previously announced his intentions to pass on the event so he could spend more time with his family.
