Woods drops out of Top 50
Tiger Woods has fallen to 51st place in the world rankings, the first time the former world No1 has been out of the top 50 since October 1996 – 623 of those at number one.

His ranking drop was cemented when South African Louis Oosthuizen finished in a three-way tie for fifth at the Dunhill Links Championship.

The 35-year-old was second in the world at the end of last year. He missed the cut at the US PGA Championship and failed to qualify for the USA PGA Tour’s playoffs.

On 3 June 2001, Woods points average stood at 32.44 points, in comparison his current average is 2.8, current number one Englishman Luke Donald averages 10.7 – the only man in double figures.

Woods has been absent for fourth months this season with injuries to his Achilles tendon and knee and has not played since missing the cut at the PGA Championship.

The 14-time major champion returns to competition this week at the Frys.com Open at CordeValle in northern California.

Donald increases his lead over compatriot Lee Westwood who is second in the rankings, US Open champion Rory McIlroy is in third spot, with Steve Stricker, the highest ranked American, ranked fourth.
