Geoff Ogilvy has been forced to withdraw from this week’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, after injuring his finger.
Ogilvy who has won the tournament for the past two years issued a statement; just hours before he was due to tee off with defending Fed Ex Champion Jim Furyk saying
“I tripped in shallow water and grazed my finger on some reef. The cut required 12 stitches and it causes discomfort to bend or place any pressure on it. I do not feel as though I can make a full swing without making some compensation to both my grip and to the way in which I would normally swing the golf club."
It is the first time since 1961 when Jerry Barber did not play, that The Tournament of Champions has not been without its defending champion.
The 33 man field is only for PGA Tour winners from the previous and Jim Furyk had to tee off alone in the last group because of the injury.
Ogilvy also announced that he would have to withdraw from next week’s Sony Open in Hawaii, but is hopeful that he will be able to play in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines later this month.
