Nicklaus backs McIlroy to come good
Following his poor start to the season there are plenty of people who are starting to doubt World No1 Rory McIlroy and his new Nike Golf clubs.

But he still has some backers, none less than the Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus.

''Rory is so talented,'' Nicklaus said. ''He's a good kid. I think he's a little frustrated, and he's frustrated at himself right now.

He's probably not playing his best, and he also has a set of golf clubs that he's having trouble getting used to, and one sort of plays off the other. He'll be fine. When Augusta rolls around, he'll be fine.''

McIlroy's local course these days can be found at The Bear's Club, which doubles as Nicklaus's own home club. Based in South Florida, the two often come across each other with the younger man frequently seeking the icon's advice.

In fact, the Golden Bear was dispensing some words of wisdom to the young superstar as recently as last Monday.

''He was struggling a little bit with his irons,'' Nicklaus said. ''But he felt confident of it. I said, 'Don't worry about it. You're too good of a player. Your clubs will not make that much difference.' Maybe it's easy for me to say.''

Easy to say, but so far McIlroy desperately needs to find his game on the course. At the Classic last weekend he complained of toothache and not being in the right place mentally.

His sponsors will be fervently hoping he re-finds his form, preferably before The Masters.
