Stellar Line-up for Greenbrier Classic
|
Despite the fear that many of the big names in golf will be resting up from the British Open, star players are still lined up for Thursday’s tee off at the Greenbrier Classic in West Virigina.
And with Tiger Woods injured and out of form they don’t come much bigger than quadruple major winner, Phil Mickelson.
“We did not have Phil (Mickelson) last year, so we’re excited to host him and his family,” said tournament director Tim McNeely.
As well as the Mickelson clan, Gary Woodland, Davis Love III and Spain’s Sergio Garcia, will all be on the scene for Greenbrier’s second year on the PGA Tour.
Evergreen Tom Watson will be skipping the U.S. Senior Open – one of the most prestigious majors on the Senior Circuit – to head down to the Mountain State to play, due to a promise made last year to Greenbrier owner Jim Justice.
Stuart Appleby with his 22-under-par in 2010 is the defending champion, but it’s the in-form Mickleson, who won the Shell Houston Open this spring and came second at the British Open, who’ll be the bookies favourite.
The tournament was a success last year, with more than 178,000 visitors. This year, organizers expect that number to be closer to 200,000.
